Fifty-three numbered positions behind the steering-column trim, or behind a glove-box cover on a right-hand-drive car. The left-hand-drive cover is the one with the AIRBAG label; it comes off starting at its lower right corner.

With the facelift the naming changes across the holder: the MMI becomes the infotainment system on F4, F10, F12 and F16, F1 is the AdBlue system's engine components, F20 turns into engine components, F21 appears for the first time as the steering column and steering-wheel heating switch module, F23 and F31 are called the right and left vehicle electrical system control modules, F32 covers the rear view camera and radar sensor, and F43 becomes the interior lights. The geometry of plate B8V-0217 is what it always was: F1 and F2 upright in the top corners around relays R1 to R3; the large positions F3, F23, F31, F43 and F50 marking the left of each band; rows F4 to F14, F15 to F22, F24 to F30, F32 to F42 (F40 half a body lower) and F44 to F49 read from the left; F52 and F51 under F50; and F53 on the right lobe with relays R5, R6 and R4 below.

The facelifted A3, on sale from the summer of 2016 as a 2017 car, keeps the engine-bay holder exactly as it was: on the left of the compartment, under a catch-released cover with the fuse clip stowed inside.

What its edition changes is the list. F20 becomes the anti-theft alarm horn, F32 is no longer listed, F35 is named as the air-conditioning function relay, F37 returns as the parking heater, and the workshop assignment rates F1 at 20 A for cars built from May 2017 instead of 40 A. The arrangement stays plate B8V-0173: bolt-down links along the top; F14, F13 and relay R4 top left with the cartridges F2 and F1 top right; R3, the cartridges F12 and F11 and R5 in the band below; three top-to-bottom columns, F15 to F21 at the left over relays R1 and R2, F31 to F38 through the middle beside R8 to R10, and F3 to F10 at the right; F22 over F23, F24, relay R7 and relay R6 across the foot.
