Instrument panel fuse box (driver's side)
Open the driver's door and the end of the instrument panel is exposed: lever the cover off at its recess and pull it away. Two spare fuses and the fuse layout sticker are inside the cover, and the fuse pliers clip into it.
The holder behind it is VW's fuse holder C, printed as Audi plate B8P-0238 in the model-year 2010 book. Three rows of MINI fuses fill the top of it (1 to 6, 7 to 11, 12 to 21), three rows of ATO fuses the middle (22 to 31, 32 to 39, 40 to 45), and a short row of MINI fuses the bottom (46 to 49); every row reads left to right. This is the year the radio and navigation circuits arrived here from the engine box, on 9, 10 and 11. Positions 7, 8, 21, 29, 30 and 35 are unassigned, and the power windows and power seats are protected by self-resetting circuit breakers rather than by fuses.

Engine compartment fuse box (30-fuse version)
The four-cylinder A3 carries thirty fuses in the electronics box on the left of the engine compartment, beside the battery. Press the two catches in the direction of their arrows and lift the cover away upwards.
This is the version VW calls the E-box low — fuse holder B, drawing N97-10449, laid on its side. F1 and F2 sit in the top left corner; the row F3 to F8 follows, then the large F25 and F26, F9 and F10 lying on their sides, and F11 to F15 at the right. The middle band is F16 and F17 at the left, F18 to F20 in the centre and F21 to F24 at the right; the four large fuses F27 to F30 run along the bottom with relay housing A1 in the centre and A2 at the bottom right. Rows read left to right, 25 to 30 are MAXI blades and the rest ATO. Model year 2010 is when this box lost its radio and navigation fuses to instrument-panel positions 9, 10 and 11 and gained F1 (terminal 30, 40 A) and F2 (engine components, 20 A); the manual of that year prints the table but illustrates the holder with the 54-fuse example, so the drawing follows plate B8P-1315 of the next edition, which is the same housing.

Engine compartment fuse box (54-fuse version)
The 3.2 V6, the S3 and the RS3 use a taller version of the same engine-bay holder, under the same cover next to the battery on the left: VW's E-box high, with fifty-four positions instead of thirty.
Model year 2010 is the only edition of the US owner's manual that prints it, as an "example with 54 plug-in fuses" on plate B8P-0232 — the VW E-box high drawing turned on its side. Top row: F1 to F5, the large F47 and F48, F6 to F8, relay R4, then F9 to F14. Middle: F15, the stack F16 to F18, F19 to F21 and F22 to F26 above F33 to F37 at the right; then F27 to F29, relay R2, the stack F30 to F32 and the large F49 to F51. Bottom: F38 to F40, relay R1, the large F52 to F54, F41 to F43, relay R3 and F44 to F46. Rows read left to right and stacks top to bottom; 47 to 54 are MAXI blades, the rest ATO.
