Left-side fuse block

The cabin fuses of the 2010 Mazda 3 - the first model year the BL generation was sold in North America - sit at the left-hand end of the dashboard, in the short panel the dash butts against just above the kick panel. Open the front door on that side and the cover is at knee height; it unclips towards you and leaves the block facing sideways into the door aperture. On a left-hand-drive car that puts it by the driver's right knee, on a right-hand-drive car by the passenger's left. The October 2008 handbook, form 8AD2-EA-08K, heads the plate "Fuse block (Passenger's side)" although the replacement procedure two pages earlier calls it the fuses on the vehicle's left side.

Three wide cartridge sockets run down the left edge as 1, 2, 3. To their right stand six columns of three narrow blades, counted down each column before stepping right, so 4-5-6 fill the first column and 19-20-21 the last. A second bank starts at the left wall again underneath: 22, 24, 26, 28, 30, 32, 33 and 34 along its upper row, with 23, 25, 27, 29 and 31 tucked under the first five of them, which is why the moulding is cut away at the bottom right. This first BL book still rates 1 BOSE, 7 ESCL and 13 R WIPER; later printings retire two of the three.

Engine compartment fuse block

Under the bonnet of the 2010 Mazda 3 the main fuse and relay block sits on the left-hand side of the engine bay, between the battery and the inner wing, under a black lid that lifts off after its catch is pressed. The fuse puller is clipped to the inside of that lid, and it is the tool the handbook expects you to use on the cabin block as well. Mazda's October 2008 book (form 8AD2-EA-08K) warns that everything here except the MAIN fuse may be replaced by hand.

The lid plate is a wide landscape drawing. A blank nameplate occupies the top left; below it a two-row block of eight small blades carries 32-35 over 36-39. Three long rows fill the centre, each opening with wide cartridge holders on the left and continuing in small blades: 1-2-3 then 4 to 8, 9-10-11 then 12 to 16, 19-20-21 then 22 to 25. Each of those rows is stepped a little right of the one above. The right-hand third of the plate is mostly relays, with 17 and 18 above 26 and 27, the small trio 29-30-31 beneath them and the large 80 A steering link 28 on its own. On this earliest BL table 1, 18 and 31 are printed without ratings.
